Home Sweat Home
We arrived in Mombasa on April 23rd at 7:40 PM Eastern African Time, after two years of research and preparation. I’ve been dreaming of coming here since I was 10 years old. This is literally a dream come true.
We spent three weeks catching up with old friends and hosting some philanthropy consulting clients in Rwanda. Our friend Jess, from London, introduced us to her friend Philip, from Ireland. Philip’s been living in Mombasa for a while and welcomed us to stay at his home until we find a place of our own, for which we are grateful.
Philip was also hosting five other friends from various places that were in town for Easter weekend. Music was flowing through the air until 6 AM. We’re right in the middle of Mombasa city where the streets are booming with life and creativity.
There are many familiar Africanism that make us feel at home. Last night I ordered a “cheese burger”. I got a bun, some veggies and a half cup of Mayonnaise, but not burger. A lengthy conversation ensued in regards to the missing meat, but I eventually got what I ordered. Home sweat home.
We’re stoked to be here and greatly looking forward to the adventures to come. It’s Easter Sunday and we’re heading to the beach; our first experience of the Indian Ocean and Africa’s East Coast.
We have no job or connection bringing us here. We’re here because we chose to move here, despite the odds. We appreciate the rawness of life. Africa is home and we’re honored to have the opportunity to live here.
This is the life we chose through much thought and deliberation. This is the beginning of a new chapter and new opportunities. I thank God we get to live this life.
And yes, I meant to say “Sweat” instead of “Sweet”. I sweat out the equivalent of my body weight daily here. And I love it!
